LEGION OF MARYBRIEF HISTORY: The LEGION OF MARY is the largest apostolic organization of the laity in the Catholic Church founded on September 7, 1921 by Frank Duff in Dublin, Ireland. It is now on its 104 years of existence with over 3 million active members in about 170 countries. It has been active in the United States since 1931, approved by 7 popes and was endorsed by the Second Vatican Council.
PURPOSE: The object of the Legion of Mary is for the glory of God through the sanctification of its members, developed by prayer and active cooperation in Mary’s and the Church’s work of crushing the head of the serpent, and advancing the reign of Christ primarily though evangelization that brings the world to Jesus through Mary.
DUTIES: The Legion of Mary members attend weekly meetings on a regular basis and do about 2 hours of apostolic work weekly. Some apostolic works include home visitation, visit to care homes, hospitals, convalescent homes, being a catechist, recruitment for membership and other works requested by the parish priest. The members also need to study the Legion of Mary handbook, pray daily the Rosary and the Legion prayers (Tessera).
True devotion to the Blessed Mother obliges apostleship. Come and join the Legion of Mary every Monday evening at 5:30 pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Center, Fremont Blvd.
